10 NEWSBOYS FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2018 NEWSBOYS FOUNDATION AWARDS David Trevorrow Newsboys Foundation Youth Leadership Award Winner 2017 Braybrook College student David Trevorrow won the Newsboys Foundation Youth Leadership Award, presented at the Victorian Student Representative Council Recognition Awards in Melbourne in October 2017. Winning the Newsboys Foundation Youth Leadership Award has been a rewarding experience for David Trevorrow, a strong advocate of student voice who places great importance on the need for empowering young people to have their say. Since graduating from high school last year, David now divides his time between studying Arts at the University of Melbourne, tutoring VCE students and volunteering at his local archery club. A former VicSRC Executive member, he now supports VicSRC’s work as their new Administration Assistant and is a Youth Advisory Group member for the Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner. David has also been an active member of the Newsboys Foundation Award Alumni group since its inception in June 2018. The $3000 prize enabled David to seek out professional training and mentors to strengthen his leadership skills while developing a leadership program within his school to build the leadership capacity of fellow students. David is a strong believer in the positive impact of young people in leadership. “My advice to fellow young people would be to focus on things you are passionate about, things that you know are good and important. Leadership isn’t just being appointed to a position but about going beyond what is expected to do something that you believe really matters.” The Newsboys Foundation Youth Leadership Award 2017 finalists were: Tabitha Anderson, Epping College ($1000) and Bryce Pace, Brauer College ($1000). Trish Thompson Newsboys Foundation Regional Music Award Winner 2018 Trish Thompson from Portland, Victoria, won the Newsboys Foundation Regional Music Award in June 2018. The award forms part of the Melbourne Recital Centre annual Bach Competition. Trish Thompson was a newcomer to Bach’s work, yet it was her interpretation and performances of Bach’s “Sleepers Awake”, “Air” and “Minuet” that brought Trish and her trumpet from Portland to the Melbourne Recital Centre for the first time to receive the award. The award provides a week of accommodation for the winner and a family member in Melbourne. The award also provides access to lessons and mentoring and direct contact with industry professionals. The prize is open to Government school students who live in rural or regional Victoria to enable access to high-level musical tuition. Trish began her musical journey learning the cornet, joining the Portland Citizens Brass Band and winning various trumpet awards before completing her AMEB Grade 7 trumpet exam. Along with the trumpet, Trish is a multi- talented musician who plays mandolin, banjo, guitar, piano and a range of brass instruments. Trish is also a singer, and her band “Since Tuesday” won the FReeZA Push Start regional heats, winning time in a recording studio and releasing their debut EP in 2017, with big plans for 2018. Trish said winning the award has sharpened her focus. “At the beginning of this year, I was still unsure of exactly what I wanted to do and which path I was set on taking in the music industry after completing Year 12, but as the year has unfolded, doors have opened, and I received the Newsboys Foundation Award. I now have clear understanding of what my goals are and what I want to achieve in the future.”
