NEWSBOYS FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2018 3 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT This year marks the 125th anniversary of Newsboys, an amazing milestone. Our philanthropic organisation – dedicated to offering young Victorians a chance to live to their full potential – has been around longer than Flinders Street Station and longer than Australia as a federated nation. Up to 1973, when the Melbourne Newsboys Club became a foundation, we had assisted thousands of newsboys build their skills, find belonging and live fulfilled lives. Times change so Newsboys Foundation continues to evolve and find new ways to help more and more young people. In 2017-18, through philanthropic grants to the organisations we support, Newsboys has reached about 3200 young people. A good example of our ongoing evolution is Newsboys’ long- standing relationship with STREAT. Supported by a special 125th anniversary multi-year grant, STREAT created the Bowen Street Café at RMIT City campus. The café provides young people with a positive, supportive environment, training and work experience in the hospitality industry. In our ongoing collaboration with Social Venture Partners, Newsboys has committed to help to build the long- term capacity of the I CAN Network, an organisation that empowers people on the autism spectrum with an ‘I CAN’ attitude. This collaboration will help ensure the sustainability of the I CAN Network well into the future. I warmly congratulate Chris Varney, CEO of the I CAN Network, on being announced as a nominee for the 2019 Victorian Australian of the Year Awards in his capacity as an autism advocate and visionary. Chris founded the I CAN Network based on his own experiences growing up and his belief that all people with autism can succeed with appropriate support. His vision has seen 800 autistic kids, teenagers and adults all over Australia benefit through the Network’s mentoring programs. The Network provides real, paid employment for 29 autistic mentors. To help celebrate our anniversary, we were proud to support the 125 BPM concert in October in 2018, in collaboration with Melbourne Youth Orchestras, Outer Urban Projects and the Melbourne Recital Centre. We also supported Kids Thrive for the ‘Kids Manifesto’ at Arts Centre Melbourne. Both were outstanding events and a wonderful way to showcase young people. The Newsboys Foundation 125 Years booklet has inspirational stories of how the Newsboys Foundation has helped young people reach their full potential. I encourage you to read it. The booklet is available to view on the Newsboys Foundation website at newsboysfoundation.org.au Five years ago, our 120th anniversary saw the introduction of the Newsboys Foundation Youth Leadership Award. Now, in Newsboys 125th year, the award recipients have come together to form the Newsboys Foundation Leadership Award Alumni group. The group will provide opportunities for our alumni to extend their professional development, seek mentorship, strengthen ties with Newsboys Foundation and form a support network. And so the evolution continues. Sandy Shaw 22 October 2018 I am fortunate to be helped in my work by some exceptional people.
