She became Treasurer of the Foundation in December 2015. A Chartered Accountant, Michelle was familiar with the Foundation having worked on Newsboys Foundation audits for some years. Michelle’s clients varied in size and included listed and unlisted entities from sectors such as manufacturing, mining, not-for-profit and services. Michelle said she was impressed by the support Newsboys provides to young Victorians through grants to a range of organisations. “There are so many diverse and disadvantaged people that are supported by Newsboys and I feel it is a privilege to be a part of that,” Michelle said. Michelle holds a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Commerce with major studies in Indonesian/Malay and Accounting from La Trobe University and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. Deryk Stephens Former Treasurer From a young age Deryk Stephens gained an understanding of the life of a newsboy. In 1950, aged about 12, he sold newspapers on the south- west corner of Toorak Road and Glenferrie Road in Kooyong, during the school holidays. But Deryk quickly gave up the newsboy’s life because, he explains, he got “a better offer sorting magazines in the shop”. Deryk joined the Newsboys Foundation board in July 2005. He was Treasurer of the Foundation from July 2008 to December 2015. Deryk has been chairperson of the Audit Committee since May 2009 and a director of the Newsboys Foundation Trust since July 2013. Deryk brings 50 years of business experience to the board. He has worked with major companies including BHP, Price Waterhouse, Bank of America, Jardine Fleming and Mallesons (Lawyers). He has also served as a director at Bank of America (Australia Ltd) and at Jardine Fleming (Australia Ltd). Wayne Bunte (retired 26/11/15) Director Wayne Bunte began selling newspapers at age nine to help his young widowed mother make ends meet. He joined the Newsboys Club in 1957 when he was just 11. Wayne had tried to join the club two years earlier, at age nine, but was told to come back when he was older and bigger. At the club, Wayne soon discovered Wednesday evening basketball: “I couldn’t wait for Wednesday to come around … Even now when I buy a Tatts ticket, I’ll always buy it on a Wednesday.” Wayne remained a member of the Newsboys Club until its city premises closed in the early-1970s. He returned to Newsboys in 2003 as a Director of the Newsboys Foundation. He remains the board’s living link to the Foundation’s origins as a club that helped the boys who sold newspapers on Melbourne city streets to reach their full potential. From 1973 to 1979 Wayne was a volunteer leader for YMCA Balwyn in basketball, administration and coaching. He was a board member at YMCA Balwyn from 1976 to 1979. Wayne has been a councillor for Camberwell, and has worked with Try Youth & Community Services. He was also a fundraising officer for the Elderly Citizens Help Organisation. Wayne holds an MBA from Victoria University and is studying for his Doctorate in Business Administration.
